Australiana Still Life 2003-2011
'Australiana Still Life' draws on the European ‘Still Life’ as a conceptual and aesthetic vehicle to explore contemporary relations to wild animals. These photographic documents of Australian roadkill, collected and frozen temporarily, aimed to raise questions about inherited cultural and historical ideas that frame present day perceptions of animals. Placing wild native animals into domestic interiors erases the perceived distance that conceptually separates humans from the natural world, exploring the role of history and our changing sense of ethical responsibility to the animals that share our environments.
